Planting seeds indoors is a great way to get an early start on your gardening. Many plants need to be started this way and then transplanted into little seedlings before they go out in the garden at the proper time when the soil is ready for them.
As your interest in garden grows, so will the number of plants and seeds you want to grow. Assembling in advance all the items you need to get the job done makes it much easier and more efficient. There are a number of steps involved in planting seeds indoors, and it can be a little daunting when you look at them all. However, it really is a process with a set number of steps and a set order to do them in. Just as you assemble all your ingredients before beginning a recipe, you assemble all your tools and materials before beginning to plant your seeds indoors.
My teacher, Barbara Phillips-Conroy, uses the following items:
- Plastic pots, either 3″ or 4″. She recommends preparing about six of these pots.
- Cell packs. These are smaller than the pots and square. They are attached to one another in sets of four or six (called 4-packs and 6-packs), and you use them for seeds and small seedlings.
- Plastic tray with clear lid, sometimes called a propagating dome. This tray has no holes in the bottom, as you don’t want water dripping through. You place your pots and cell packs inside before you put them under lights.
- Soilless mix. I thought you could just bring in soil from the garden to plant your seeds indoors, but Barbara told me that was a no-no! You use instead a commercial preparation called soilless mix. There are different varieties and formulas, and Barbara recommends a mix of peat, vermiculite and perlite without fertilizer (already prepared in packages in your nursery).
- Sealable plastic kitchen bags like the ones you use to freeze or store food in the fridge (we used Ziploc® brand). Sometimes you can use these for one or two pots instead of putting them in the plastic tray. I guess experience helps you decide when to do this.
- Florescent lights. These are to give your little seedlings the right light to start propagating, and they hang about 2 – 4″ above the leaves, so you need to be able to adjust the height to accommodate different plant heights. Barbara emphasized to me that I don’t need to buy any special fancy lighting — ordinary shop lights will do the trick.
- Fertilizer. Barbara uses organic fertilizer for her veggies and a 15-30-15 chemical mix for her flowers. The staff in your nursery can help you choose this.
- Plant tags and a waterproof pen. When you have lots of seeds you need to put tags in the pots so that you will remember which is which. These get wet during the process, so that’s why the tags and pen must be waterproof.
- Scissors. I couldn’t believe how tricky it can be to open some of these seed packets and keep the very tiny seeds from flying all over. Barbara almost always cuts the packages open with scissors for this reason.
- Finally, a small watering can is handy when you need to add small amounts of water to the pots before placing them under lights.
Of course you can use and reuse many of these items, but they are all essential to do an efficient job of planting your seeds indoors.
